My whole life had been spent just trying to get back to Aerik’s side, and without him in the world, I had nowhere to be. No reason.

James opened his gateway before the giant doors to the castle and watched me walk through, my bloody cheeks stained with tears, even though they’d dried up with shock. I stood there and looked up at him, with no words on my lips and yet a hundred things I wanted to say.

You killed him. You took his life and I don't know what to do now. It was just too sudden.

I’m sorry he pushed you to that point—that you had to kill your own son.

I can’t believe he tried to kill me.

Did he try to kill me?

Would he have backed down?

Did I misread it?

Why? Aerik, why?

But James saw it all there on the tip of my tongue and gently shook his head. “You will never know how sorry I am, Camille,” he offered. “And I know you will never understand that I am also not sorry.”

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” I asked, voice barely a whisper.

“I took a life, but it was to protect someone I truly care for.” He nodded once to himself, his eyes sunken and red with grief. “I just hope you can forgive me someday.”

A gentle breeze brushed my hair back then with the scent of pines as the gateway closed and James vanished. I hugged my arms, frozen to the spot, feeling the castle grow taller behind me.

The studded door pushed open on its iron hinges then, and Adonis stepped out, his hands clasped firmly at his front. “By the Magus,” he said in a quivering breath. “He warned me he might not return, and I can only assume, from the anguish in your eye…”

Air huffed from the back of my throat, my heart sinking into the base of my ribs. “You knew he was going up there?”

“I had no power to stop him,” he implored, raising both hands. “You know this, my queen. Please do not bear anger toward me.”

My queen. Two simple words that became a statement in that moment more than they ever had before. “I…” I looked around for a friendly face, someone to hold onto me and make sense of all this. “I think I’m in shock.”

Adonis’s hand came down on my shoulder and his eyes went to my neck. I touched the bloody smudges there, my fingertips shaking now. “He… Aerik tried to kill me.”

“I was afraid for you,” he said regretfully. “He was in a rage when he left. I spent the better part of the evening cleaning his laboratory.”

“Why? What happened?” I asked in a trembling voice, my fingertips sticking to the blood on my neck. “Why was he so angry?”

“He said you’d lain with another.” Adonis narrowed a pale-green eye at me. “He said he woke to the undeniable feeling of life accumulating within you.
